Wildlife Wednesdays: Fourth of July Pet Safety

Fourth of July weekend is coming up where we gather together with family and friends for outdoor activities and fireworks! This is a fun time for all but it can be a very stressful time for our pets. More pets actually go missing between July 4-6 than any other time of the year. Here are some tips to keep your pet happy and safe this holiday weekend.

1. Make sure you pet has ID and is up-to-date

Make sure all of your pets' information is correct on their tags. If your pets are not microchipped, talk to your vet about doing so. This can greatly improve your chances of getting your pets back if they become lost. Make sure you also have a current photo of your pet.

2. Make sure the environment is safe and secure

Make sure they have a safe place to go indoors and outdoors when fireworks occur. Keep your outdoor animals fenced in at all times and make sure to provide them safe shelter. Keep your pets safe as well from the heat. Make sure your pet has plenty of food and cold water at all times! DO NOT LEAVE ANY ANIMAL IN A HOT CAR!

3. Leave your pets at home

It is fun to have your pets come along with you to parties, boating, or the big firework display. Loud fireworks, unfamiliar places, and crowds can all be very terrifying for your pets. This increases the risk of them becoming spooked and running away. Consider putting your pets in a safe, escape-proof room or crate, during parties and fireworks. If you are hosting a party this year, keep sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, charcoal, and kebob skewers away from pets. Keep your pet away from the barbecue grill and avoid feeding them table scraps. ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Phone Number: (888) 426-4435.

4. Check your yard post-holiday

Check your yard and patio for firework debris before letting your pet back out. Debris, even if you did not set any fireworks off yourself, can make its way into your yard, where pets can get ahold of it.
