2018 Fall Foliage Forecast

As many begin traveling to seek out beautiful fall colors at this time of year, it’s good to know in what abundance of beauty you can expect to see in different parts of the country. The average peak of fall foliage is from mid-September through mid-October. For many, the peak coloring looks to be right around mid-October this year.

Leaves produce their green coloring when creating Chlorophyll during the abundance of sunshine in the summer. This gives plants the energy to undergo photosynthesis, which is the key process of a plant’s life-cycle. As the days get shorter towards the end of summer and beginning of fall, the lack of sunlight leads to the lack of Chlorophyll production. Without Chlorophyll, the plant begins to lose its green coloring and starts to decay, giving way to the stunning hues of orange, red, and yellow for the fall season.
