This Day in Weather History

1987 - A powerful winter storm spread heavy snow from the Southern Rockies, across the Middle Mississippi Valley, to southwestern sections of the Great Lakes Region, while freezing rain fell in Oklahoma and Texas. Wellington, Kansas received one foot of snow, with Tulia, Texas receiving 16 inches.
1982 - Arctic air controlled much of the country. Tower Minnesota had a low of 52 below zero while Chicago plummeted to 26 below. The Deep South was not spared either as Jackson Mississippi fell to 5 below zero.

Weather Word of the Day

Anomalous Propagation - Often abbreviated as AP. It is a false reflectivity echo on the radar display. Instead of being caused by precipitation, these false echos occur when the radar beam is refracted back down towards the surface, thereby producing ground clutter. Other examples of AP can occur when the radar beam bounces off of insects, birds, or other airborne wildlife. High terrain areas, such as mountain ranges can also cause AP.
